Québec applies Regulation Q-2, r. 22 to isolated dwellings and other covered properties. The municipality enforces the regulation and may also set septic pumping procedures.

General scopeIsolated dwellings and other covered buildings or sites not connected to an authorized sewer system.

Contact the municipality before installing, replacing or changing a system.
Provide the site, soil, building-capacity and system-design information requested locally.
Follow municipal pumping rules and keep treatment-system maintenance records.

Ask the municipality which permit or certificate and supporting documents are required.

Have a qualified professional assess the site and prepare the required plans.

Obtain municipal authorization before construction or a major change.

Complete inspections, operation, pumping and maintenance required for the selected system.

Important requirementA compliant system is required for a new covered building, an added bedroom, a change of use or an increase in operating or occupancy capacity. Municipalities may regulate septic-tank pumping frequency and procedures.
